The Sprawl is a mess, always has been. Crowded, crooked streets, filled with neon signs and hover messengers and empty stim capsules, buildings so tall you can’t even see the sun. It feels like Hades has been running the place forever, no one’s old enough to remember a time before him, or his real name. The law never reaches The Sprawl, police – droid and human alike – turn back at its borders, knowing better than to trudge into Hades’ territory without adequate backup. It’s become a place of refuge and sanctuary for the mods, the junkies, and the runners, anyone cast out of their homes.

But Persephone isn’t here by choice. She’s a hostage of sorts: as long as she’s here on Hades’ arm, her mayor father wouldn’t dare send in troops to clean up The Sprawl; at least this way he knows she’s alive. She’s grown into her role as Queen of The Sprawl over the years, no longer afraid of the streets and those who live there. She sits next to Hades while surfers talk of jacking into Capital City’s mainframe, while dealers babble on about new formulas, while hackers display new eyes and arms. Theirs is not a rule of goodwill.

Hades laughs as his pupils dilate with the newest stim, higher than ever before, and Persephone licks the champagne from her lips. The electric blue of her hair never fades and her silver data lenses still shine as they slide over her eyes and she can nav through firewalls faster than most pros. But behind closed doors, when no one’s watching and the cameras are blocked, she has the dejected slump of someone who’s been here far too long.

It’s good news for Persephone, for the Keres are moving in. No longer satisfied with their domain over the Outer Burbs, preying on the stim junkies and VR jocks born of the unholy union between upper-class upbringings and complete boredom, the Keres have their sights set on The Sprawl. Persephone tells herself she’s seen Hades make enough deals that she knows what she’s doing when she meets their leader in an alley just outside The Sprawl. They shake on it, the only witness a homeless man who lost his eyes years ago in a triad bet. The Keres screams toward the sky and climbs up the wall to meet her sisters on the roof, nanopads on her fingers sticking to the bricks.

The homeless man laughs as the wind picks up, blowing half-read and fully-forgotten flimsies across the alley. Rain begins in the distance. “A girl should know better,” he says.

Persephone pulls her pistol from its holster and fires once, the shot muffled by thunder. He’ll be awake in two hours with a headache; he’s the kind of guy who doesn’t die easy. No one dies easy here.
